Torrington musician Dale Osterman says he enrolled at Western because “it was a financially sound decision, especially once I was granted the Merit Scholar award from the Honors Program. Additionally, WCSU is very adept at marketing itself, and many charismatic members of the community here made it seem like a worthy investment of my undergrad years."

Osterman says he arrived at WCSU planning to be a Bachelor of Arts in Music student, uncertain of what he wanted to do, but knowing that he was passionate about music and the creative arts. "I eventually decided that I wanted to be a composition major, only to discover that Western does not offer that degree," he says. "At the end of my freshman year, however, I learned of the new Audio and Music Production program that was about to be accredited. It was the next best thing to a composition major: an opportunity to work in multiple genres of music, learn about the industry side of it, and write and record my own works while still having lessons on my instrument, the cello."

Osterman says he was fortunate to be able to take cello lessons for three semesters from Adjunct Instructor of Music Richard Vaudrey. "He gave me a new love for the instrument and helped me develop as a player and as a person, and I think his methods of teaching made me more confident as well as competent. Additionally, I studied production with Associate Professor of Music Dr. Douglas O’Grady and composition with Professor of Music Dr. Kevin Jay Isaacs, both of whom helped me grow as a composer and gave me confidence in my abilities."

Asked what he will remember most about his Western experience, Osterman says, "Having the opportunity to write, perform and record my own original music in our beautiful new facility alongside some very talented student performers was a highlight of my time at Western."

After graduation, Osterman will attend the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford to pursue a master’s degree in Composition.

Osterman’s advice to new students entering WCSU is: “Keep yourself open, both in mind and to experience. You don’t know everything, nor are you the most perfect version of yourself — not yet— and the beautiful thing is that you have so much to learn and so much you can become. Love the journey for itself, outside of whatever destination you think you are heading toward: you might surprise yourself.”
