Sexual Violence On College Campuses

  • 1 in 5 women will experience sexual violence during their time in college (Dupain and Lombardi 2014; Exner and Cummings 2011).

  • 1 in 16 men will be sexually assaulted at college (National Sexual Violence Resource Center 2012, 2)

  • Much of this sexual violence takes place between people who know each other (Lisak and Miller 2002; Amar, Sutherland, and Kesler 2012; Hollander 2014).

  • Among college women, 9 in 10 victims of rape and sexual assault knew their offender (Fisher, Cullen, Turner 2000, 17).

  • From 1995-2013, females ages 18-24 experienced the highest rate of rape and sexual assault victimizations compared to females in all other age groups. (Krakauer 2015, xiii).

  • 14.2% of men reported having experienced some form of sexual abuse (including rape and or sexual assault) (Briere & Elliott 2003, 1210).

  • First-year and sophomore students are at greater risk for victimization than juniors and seniors. (Krebs et al. 2007, 6-3).

  • A study by the World Health Organization states that 35% of women globally have experienced physical and/or sexual violence at some point in their lifetime (WHO 2013, Executive Summary, 1).

  • 47.1% of women report experiencing their first IPV experience between ages 18-24, the most common age (Black et al. 2011, 49)

  • Nearly 2/3 of rapists on college campuses are serial offenders with an average of 6 sexual assaults each (White House Council on Women and Girls Report, 2014)

Domestic Violence and Interpersonal Violence

  • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men in the United States have experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime (Black et al. 2011, 43)

  • In 2008, 14% of state and 17% of local firearms application rejections were due to a domestic violence misdemeanor conviction or restraining order. (Bowling et al. 2008, 1)

  • Of females killed with a firearm, almost two-thirds of them are killed by an intimate partner. (National Network to End Domestic Violence 2012)

  • Reproductive Coercion and Abuse: 8.6% (10.3 million) of women in the US reported ever having an intimate partner who tried to get them pregnant when they didn't want to (4.8%), or refused to use a condom (6.7%) (Black et al 2011, 48)

Sexual Violence and LGBTQ-Identifying Individuals

  • Male victims of sexual assault may have trouble identifying their experience because of the myth that men cannot be raped and all men (who are gay or straight) always want sex (National Sexual Violence Resource Center & Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape 2012, 3).

  • People who identify as transgender are targets of sexual violence often because of their gender non-conformity (National Sexual Violence Resource Center & Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape 2012, 3).

  • 40% of gay men report experiencing sexual violence in their lifetime (The Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence 2016, 8).

  • 1 in 8 lesbian women will be sexually assaulted (The Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence 2016, 8).

  • 47% of bisexual men report experiencing sexual violence (The Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence 2016, 8).

  • Lesbian and bisexual women are 3 times more likely to experience sexual violence than heterosexual women (The Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence 2016, 8).

  • 2 in 5 gay men will be sexually abused (The Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence 2016, 8).

Stalking

  • During a 12-month period, one study estimates 3.4 million people (age 18 or older) were victims of stalking. (Baum et al. 2009, 1)

    • Within the same study, approximately 2.4 million people (age 18 or older) were victims of sexual harassment. (Baum et al. 2009, 2)

    • Nearly 3 in 4 victims knew their offender in some capacity. (Baum et al. 2009, 4)

  • 61% of female victims and 44% of male victims of stalking are stalked by a current or former intimate partner. (Breiding et al. 2014; Stalking Resource Center 2012, 1)

  • According to one study, 76% of femicide victims and 85% of attempted femicide victims reported experienced at least one instance of stalking by their intimate partner within 12 months of the violent incident (i.e. femicide, severe violence, or attempted femicide.) (McFarlane et al 1999, 311).
