Hannah Levinson

Adjunct Instructor of Music
Applied Viola, Chamber Music, Strings Workshop

Violist Hannah Levinson is committed to performing music written today and in the past 50 years. She has worked with composers such as Christian Wolff, Jason Eckardt, John Heiss, and Mohammed Fairouz, and performs regularly with Ensemble Moto Perpetuo, Mimesis Ensemble and the TACTUS ensemble. Based in New York City, Hannah has played in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, Symphony Space, Merce Cunningham Studios, the DiMenna Center, and The Stone, as well as in Boston’s Jordan Hall. She has performed works by a wide variety of composers, including Elliott Carter, Mario Davidovsky, Gerard Grisey, and Iannis Xenakis. In the past year, she commissioned two works for solo viola and is dedicated to continuing to collaborate with composers.

Hannah is passionate about both performance and education, and strives to make music feel more applicable to everyday life. Using experience and knowledge she gained from heading a teen leadership program in Boston in 2009-10, she believes that music can be a tool to help children learn life skills, such as cooperation, creativity, and self-confidence. A recipient of the NEC Community Performance and Partnerships Teaching Fellowship, she created and implemented a program focused on those goals at a Haitian community center in Boston. She taught at the Harmony Program, a non-profit in NYC, and now teaches at the Larchmont Music Academy in Larchmont, NY. Hannah is also adjunct faculty at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT.

Hannah completed her MM in Contemporary Performance at the Manhattan School of Music, and graduated from Oberlin College and Conservatory with degrees in both Russian and East European Studies and Viola Performance. Before moving to Manhattan, she spent a year studying at the New England Conservatory. Her primary teachers include Nadia Sirota, Martha Strongin Katz, and Karen Ritscher. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, Hannah is an avid runner and enjoys recreationally racing.
