Biology : SURF Program Description

James Hannon

Through my research investigating the osmoregulatory abilities of Atlantic killifish, I was able to deepen my understanding of important and exciting topics, including the intersection of animal physiology and climate change, while also gaining skills in lab techniques such as blood analyses and quantitative PCR. While this research experience was beneficial to me personally, we hope it can also contribute to the understanding of how environmental factors associated with climate change such as temperature and salinity are impacting local estuarine fishes. I am endlessly thankful for Dr. Monette’s challenging and compassionate mentorship and the support I received as a student researcher from every single professor I was fortunate enough to interact with in the WCSU Biology department.

To all future SURF fellows, remember that some of the most rewarding experiences come from challenging yourself and that questions left unasked are never answered.
