Ergonomics

Ergonomics

Ergonomics is the science of fitting the job to the worker (OSHA).  Poor ergonomic practices such as repetitive motions, awkward postures and forceful exertions put workers at risk of injury.

Assessments

We're here to help keep our workers safe and comfortable in the workplace.  If you are interested in completing and ergonomic assessment, reach out to EHS.  We will have a representative review your workplace and make recommendations to foster healthy work habits.

Helpful Tips for the Office

  • Adjust the top of your computer monitor to eye level.  Avoid having to tilt your head forward or backward.
  • Keep your feet flat on the ground.  Use a footrest if needed.
  • Adjust your keyboard so that your arms are at a 90 degree angle with the body.  Your wrists should be straight with your forearms.
  • Get up and move.  Avoid sitting at your desk for extended periods of time.

Helpful Tips for the Field

  • Avoid prolonged periods of bending over
  • Do not twist your body while lifting.  If you need to turn, turn your whole body.
  • Rotate through different jobs to minimize repetitive motions.
  • For overhead work, avoid overreaching.  Adjust the lift or scaffolding as needed.
