Dr. Galina Bakhtiarova holds her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in translation from Moscow Linguistic University, and Master’s and Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Southern California.  At Western, she teaches classes in Spanish language, literature and culture, and she leads an annual trip to Spain each summer.  She writes on nineteenth and twentieth century Spanish, Catalan and Caribbean culture including music, literature, and cinema from the viewpoint of Transatlantic relations and cultural theory.  She is currently preparing for publishing her book-length study of the habanera in Catalonia.  Future projects include an exploration of the representation of Spain in opera, and a comparative study of two extraordinary music figures: Sebastián Iradier, author of “La paloma,” a universally recognized melody that added a Spanish tinge to American jazz, and of Xavier Cugat whose contribution to the musical world through broadcasting and Hollywood helped define “Latin music” for international audiences in the twentieth century.
