She is a cog in a machine she did not build. In Sophie Treadwell’s Machinal, one woman’s life is shaped and ultimately shattered by the mechanized forces of modern society. This visceral, physical production explores the collapse of a soul forced to submit to the grinding pressures of labor, gender, and social expectation. Inspired by the 1928 true crime case of Ruth Snyder and told with the cold precision of an assembly line, Machinal asks: what happens when the need to get free outweighs the unthinkable cost?
