On Saturday, Jan. 27, the Western Connecticut State University Wolves will host the VTSU-Castleton Spartans in a Play4Kay Day women’s basketball game at 2 p.m.  Everyone is encouraged to wear pink in support of the Play4Kay cause.  Donations, which will be given to local cancer organizations on behalf of WestConn women’s basketball, will be accepted prior to and during Saturday’s contest with the Spartans.  The Play4Kay initiative is an opportunity for teams across the nation to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

Since its inception in 2007, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund has awarded more than 8 million dollars to support life-saving cancer research and underserved programs that provide access to quality cancer healthcare.  Play4Kay is the largest fundraising initiative of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Olympic gold medal-winning and Naismith Hall of Fame coach, Kay Yow, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and passed away on January 24, 2009. Coach Yow did not lose her battle to cancer. She simply turned the battle over to all of us.

The vision of Play4Kay came directly from Coach Kay Yow. Through Play4Kay, she saw a way to bring communities together and honor cancer warriors, survivors, and thrivers in the fight against cancer.  Uniting players, coaches, ocials, and fans to do something for the greater good that far exceeds wins and losses in competition, the Play4Kay initiative is our largest fundraiser and plays a major role in our success.
