Inauguration of Connecticut State University System Chancellor David G. Carter Sr.

DANBURY, CONN. — At 10:45 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 20, Gov. M. Jodi Rell will lead the inaugural procession of dignitaries when the Connecticut State University System inaugurates Dr. David G. Carter Sr. as its new chancellor. The formal program will begin at 11 a.m. in the Welte Auditorium at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain.

David George Carter Sr. became the fifth president of Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) on April 2, 1988 — the first African American president of a four-year institution of higher education in Connecticut. Prior to his arrival at ECSU, Carter was a professor and a member of the graduate faculty in the department of educational administration at the University of Connecticut from 1977-1988. He also was a professor at the Pennsylvania State University from 1973-1977.

Carter earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Central State University in Ohio. He received a M.Ed. degree in curriculum and supervision at Miami (Ohio) University and a Ph.D. in educational development and educational administration from Ohio State University.

Carter succeeds Dr. William J. Cibes Jr., who retired in February after serving as chancellor since 1994.

The Connecticut State University System includes Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven and Western Connecticut State University in Danbury. While the individual universities were founded more than a century ago, the four schools officially were joined together into a system in 1983.
