WestConn to host CSU Faculty Research Conference Oct. 14

DANBURY, CONN. — Researchers from the four campuses of the Connecticut State University (CSU) System will converge at the Science Building on WestConn’s Midtown campus to share their scholarship and ideas with colleagues at the 10th CSU Faculty Research Conference to be held Saturday, Oct. 14.

Associate Professor of Nursing Dr. Colleen Delaney, a member of the WestConn organizing committee, observed the conference’s title, “Advancing Scholarship Across Disciplines,” underscores the rich diversity of research themes that will be covered during the one-day event.

“One of the great things about this conference is that it provides an opportunity to celebrate research spanning many different academic disciplines,” Delaney said. “There will be quite a selection, and it’s not only about traditional research — innovative learning activities, musical performances and landscape painting also will be presented.”

The CSU Faculty Research Conference will feature more than 100 presentations by some 135 faculty members and doctoral candidates from Western, Southern, Central and Eastern Connecticut state universities. The conference will showcase faculty and doctoral research in some 20 disciplines represented at the conference, including education, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, biology, engineering, nursing, business, communications, history, English and library science.

The conference will begin at 8:15 a.m. with opening remarks from President James W. Schmotter and German Bermudez, CSU System associate executive officer for assessment and learning technologies. Oral presentations will be grouped by discipline and subject in panels that will be offered during one of three conference sessions beginning at 8:30 a.m., 10:15 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Participants also will be able to view approximately 20 poster displays to be shown in the Science Building atrium, with researchers presenting their posters during a session from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m.

Among the less traditional presentations of the conference will be a talk about music composition accompanied by the live performance of an original work. A panel discussion on the creative process of painting also will be complemented by display of several artistic works during the poster session.

The conference will conclude with a luncheon for presenters and attendees at 1 p.m. in Warner Hall on the Midtown campus. Students from the WestConn music department will perform during the luncheon.

A highlight of the luncheon will be the presentation of the first Trustees Research Awards, an annual program established by the CSU Board of Trustees to recognize faculty for exceptional research and scholarly contributions in their field during the previous five years. Delaney noted a total of five research awards for 2006 will be announced at the conference luncheon: One faculty member from each of the four CSU System campuses will be recognized, and one of these four awardees also will be named to receive the 2006 CSU System Trustees Research Award.

Admission to the conference will be free, and individuals planning to attend the conference are strongly encouraged to pre-register online at www.wcsu.edu/csufrc. Walk-in registrations to attend conference sessions also will be accepted from 7:30 to 8 a.m. on the day of the conference, but reservation for the luncheon will be guaranteed only with advance registration.

In addition to Delaney, members of the WestConn organizing committee for the conference are Assistant Professor of Management Dr. Richard Bassett, Professor of Astronomy Dr. Dennis Dawson, Professor of Education Dr. Marcia Delcourt, and Coordinator of University Events Helen Masterson.
