2015 Western to host forum on campus disaster mitigation plan
DANBURY, CONN. — Western Connecticut State University and the Connecticut State Colleges & Universities (ConnSCU) are developing a plan to identify natural hazards and vulnerabilities, as well as steps that can be taken to reduce the risks they pose.
Students, faculty, staff and members of the public are invited to learn about and comment on the Multi-Campus Hazard Mitigation Plan at a forum at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, in Room 202 of the Midtown Student Center, 181 White St. in Danbury.
The plan, which includes ConnSCU’s four state Universities, 12 Community Colleges and Charter Oak State College, will assist the campuses in identifying and reducing risks from natural hazards, identify actions that can be taken to prevent loss of life and damage to property, and prioritize funding for mitigation efforts.
The Hazard Mitigation Plan will describe the vulnerability at each campus to various natural hazards, along with actions and projects that can be undertaken to reduce risks. While natural disasters cannot be prevented, putting in place mitigation strategies identified in the plan will make ConnSCU campuses more sustainable and disaster-resilient.
At the Feb. 17 forum, members of the planning committee will be available to answer questions and listen to community and stakeholder comments after a brief overview of the plan.
The project is funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency with a grant allocated by the Connecticut Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.
