Guitarist-composer Scofield to share his talent, techniques at WestConn

DANBURY, CONN. — On Friday, Dec. 4, legendary guitarist and composer John Scofield will visit Western Connecticut State University for a series of master classes and an evening concert featuring students from WestConn’s Jazz Studies Program.

At 1 p.m. in Room 127 of White Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury, Scofield will work with student combos in a master class setting. The master class will be open to public with the purchase of a ticket to a jazz combos concert with Scofield at 8 p.m. on Friday night. At 4:30 p.m., also in Room 127 of White Hall, Scofield will give a one-hour lecture about his career as an internationally acclaimed jazz musician, which also will be open to concert ticket-holders.

Scofield will perform with WestConn student combos at 8 p.m. in Ives Concert Hall in White Hall. General admission tickets will be $15; senior citizens and students will be admitted for $10. Tickets are available at www.wcsu.edu/tickets or by calling (203) 837-8499.

Jamie Begian, coordinator of WCSU’s Jazz Studies program, said it promises to be a “great day” with Scofield on campus.

“We are so excited to have John Scofield as our guest artist this fall,” Begian said. “John is someone who broadened the sound of the guitar in jazz music and, through his compositions and recordings, reshaped the sound and feel of jazz in general. John has played with such jazz legends as Miles Davis and Charles Mingus, so he’s got a great historic story to tell as well.”
