2013 Upcoming events at Ives Concert Park to feature improv, music, dance
DANBURY, CONN. — The diversity of entertainment offerings this summer continues at Ives Concert Park on the Western Connecticut State University Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury.
Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” Radio Romance Tour will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 25. The show will include duet singing, absurd improvisation with sound effects, poetry, outright foolishness and the news from Lake Wobegon. Featured will be host and writer Garrrison Keillor, singer and fiddler Sara Watkins, comedian Fred Newman, Rich Dworkshy and the Guy’s All Star Shoe Band with guitarist Pat Donohue and violinist/
mandolinist Richard Kriehn. Tickets for Garrison Keillor are available at ticketmaster.com and ticketmaster kiosks in area Walmart stores. They’ll also be available at the Ives gate, cash only, on the night of the show. Gates open at 6 p.m.
On Friday, July 26, dance will be the featured performance medium for the Newtown Savings Bank Fine Arts and Family Series at Ives. At 6 p.m., John Vitti, of Vitti’s Dance Studio, will offer a free ballroom dance class. At 7 p.m., Connecticut Ballet’s dancers will perform classical and contemporary duets narrated and produced by Artistic Director Brett Raphael. Following the performance, attendees can join the cast on stage for a Meet & Greet Dance Party Reception. The event is free; donations will be accepted online at the venue. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
The month of August will start with an eight-hour Beatles music festival on Saturday, Aug. 3. Returning for the second consecutive year, “Danbury Fields Forever” will feature multiple bands performing Beatles music of different eras from noon to 8 p.m. Tickets are available at beatlesmusicfestival.eventbrite.com with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit Newtown Parks & Recreation’s Dickinson Memorial Playground Fund.
