WestConn to host Chilean poet Javier Campos
DANBURY, CONN. — Western Connecticut State University’s department of world languages and literature, and the Spanish Honors Society, Sigma Delta Pi, will present a conversation and poetry reading by Chilean poet Javier Campos. Campos’ talk, “Utopia, Dictadura, Exilo y Globalización” will be from 1 – 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26, in Alumni Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The event will be in Spanish and will be free and open to the public.
Campos is an award-winning poet, author and a regular columnist for El Mostrador, a Latin American newspaper. He also is an associate professor of modern language and literature at Fairfield University.
WestConn Assistant Professor of World Languages and Literature Dr. Galina Bakhtiarova is bringing Campos to Danbury.
“Javier Campos’ visit is part of the Spanish poetry class that I am teaching this semester,” Bakhtiarova said. “Students who take this class are majoring or minoring in Spanish, and many of them are of Hispanic descent. Reading his poetry and meeting this accomplished poet, writer, journalist and the first Hispanic full-time professor at Fairfield University will be an inspiring and encouraging experience for them.
“This event brings together WestConn’s emphasis on learning through difference and diversity, and the university’s interest in the success of our students, many of whom are Hispanic,” Bakhtiarova added.
