Walkabout Clearwater singers to perform at WestConn on Oct. 27
DANBURY, CONN. — The Walkabout Clearwater Chorus, a group of volunteer singers and musicians from New York’s Hudson River Valley whose performances over more than two decades have carried on the musical and activist legacy of folk legend Pete Seeger, will perform at Western Connecticut State University at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, in a concert to benefit scholarship programs at WestConn.
The Walkabout Clearwater group will present selections from a wide-ranging repertory of folk songs, including traditional works and original songs written or adapted by members of the chorus. The performance will be in Alumni Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Admission fees at the door will be $10 for adults, and free for students and children.
The self-described “People’s Chorus” will be drawn from a larger organization of more than 100 non-professional singers brought together by their love of folk music and their commitment to environmental conservation, peace, racial harmony and social justice. Founded in 1984 with help and inspiration from Seeger, a native of the Hudson Valley region, members of the chorus have toured New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania to stage benefit concerts, as well as performing monthly since 1987 at a folk music coffeehouse in White Plains, N.Y.
The Walkabout Clearwater concert will benefit the School of Arts and Sciences Student International Study Scholarship program at WestConn. Dean of Arts and Sciences Dr. Linda Vaden-Goad explained the scholarship fund demonstrates the university’s commitment to provide the opportunity for every WestConn student to study abroad, regardless of family financial circumstances.
Vaden-Goad noted the afternoon concert is especially geared for families and students of all ages. Press information provided by the chorus described the group’s concert program as a medley of selections ranging from “boisterous sing-alongs with audience participation to carefully crafted, harmonious messages designed to make the listener think twice about the state of the world.”
The chorus is part of Walkabout Clearwater Sloop, Inc., a chartered sloop club that supports the environmental efforts of the Poughkeepsie-based Hudson River sloop Clearwater.
