(2016) Western to host ‘College Goal Sunday’
DANBURY, CONN. — Western Connecticut State University will host the statewide college financial aid event “College Goal Sunday” on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, from 1 to 4 p.m. for high school seniors and students new to college.
The event, held in the Student Center on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury, sponsored by the Connecticut Association of Professional Financial Aid Administrators (CAPFAA) and supported by the African-American Affairs Commission, American Savings Foundation, Connecticut Higher Education Supplemental Loan Authority (CHESLA), National College Access Network, Connecticut Association of Educational Opportunity Programs (CAEOP) and Follett Bookstore, will offer the CGS program to assist students and parents with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is the federal application that is required to receive federal financial aid including the Federal Pell Grant and student loans as well as the need-based state grants.
Due to the great demand expected for assistance in completing the FAFSA, families are encouraged to register for the free event at www.collegegoalsundayct.org. The FAFSA is the key to funding a college education and helping families overcome financial barriers that otherwise prevent students from attending the institution they want to attend. Studies show that a student is 50 percent more likely to attend college if the FAFSA is completed.
CAPFAA is a nonprofit, professional organization for individuals actively engaged in the administration of financial aid for higher education within the State of Connecticut. As an educational organization, it strives to offer resources to students, families and high school advisers to promote higher education and increase awareness of financial aid opportunities.
Students who participate in College Goal Sunday can enter to win a $200 scholarship, regardless of whether they attend WCSU in the fall.
