WestConn professor to discuss sometimes hidden stories woven into quilts

DANBURY, CONN. — Western Connecticut State University Assistant Professor of Communication Dr. Lisa Davis will talk about the stories woven by quilters into their handiwork when she discusses “Tell Me a Story: Quilting and Women’s History (P.S. Men Tell Stories Too!)” on Friday, March 30, at two area senior living communities.

Davis will speak at 10 a.m. at Ridgefield Crossings, 640 Danbury Road in Ridgefield and at 2 p.m. at The Village at Brookfield Common, 246A Federal Road in Brookfield. The lectures will be free and the public is invited. Seats are limited; call (203) 431-2255 to reserve a space at the Ridgefield presentation or (203) 775-8696 to reserve a space in Brookfield.

March is Women’s History Month and WestConn’s monthlong celebration is called “The Fabric of Our Lives.” Davis said her talk will be of interest not only to quilters, but also to those who appreciate the history of both genders.

“In this talk, I will share my research on quilting and women’s history, how quilting grew into its present popularity, and the ways in which men participate in quilting,” she said.

A native of Northern California, Davis holds a doctorate in Communication from Ohio State University. Her interests lie in rhetorical theory and criticism, gender, and health communication.

Davis’ talk is one of an ongoing series of educational classes offered by WestConn faculty, staff and alumni at The Village at Brookfield Common and Ridgefield Crossings, senior living communities with independent and assisted-living style apartments. The series next will feature Connecticut State University Distinguished Professor and WestConn Professor of English Dr. John Briggs, who will discuss “Metaphor and Our ‘Third Self’: The Nature Poetry of Mary Oliver” at 10 a.m. in Ridgefield and 2 p.m. in Brookfield on Monday, April 30.
