WestConn to offer many gifts for music-lovers in December
DANBURY, CONN. — Whether your musical taste leans toward symphony orchestra, saxophone-laden jazz, holiday classics or pure percussion, there will be something for everyone at Western Connecticut State University in December. All concerts will be in Ives Concert Hall in White Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. And with the exception of the WCSU Jazz Combos concert featuring guest artist Jimmy Greene on Friday, Dec. 8, the concerts will be free. All performances will be open to the public with donations to the music department accepted.
The month of music will begin at noon on Monday, Dec. 4, when WCSU student jazz combos Tomlinson II, Scott II, Siegel II and the Begian combo will perform a lunchtime concert in Ives Concert Hall.
At 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7, the WCSU Orchestra will perform. Featured will be clarinet student Hilary Brown, of Ridgefield, performing Mozart’s Concerto in A major. Also on the program will be Handel’s “Water Music,” as well as Serenade in C minor, K. 388, also by Mozart.
Guest saxophonist Jimmy Greene will join the WCSU Jazz Combos at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8. Tickets will be $10 for adults, and $5 for senior citizens and non-WestConn students. WestConn students will be admitted free with valid ID. Greene is an award-winning composer and bandleader who was named First Runner-Up in the prestigious 1996 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. DownBeat magazine in 1999 proclaimed him one of the “25 Young Rising Stars in Jazz.”
Monday, Dec. 11, will feature the WCSU Percussion Ensemble, performing at 8 p.m. Featured works will include Lou Harrison’s violin concerto, performed by Professor of Music Eric Lewis on violin. Also included will be works by Mary Jeanne van Appledorn, Ronald Lo Presti and Lynn Glassock. The evening will conclude with soca music by Arthur Lipner.
There is no better way to get in the holiday spirit than to attend the WCSU Holiday Jazz concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 17. Performing will be award-winning Frankensax, conducted by Andrew Beals; the WCSU Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Dave Scott; and the WCSU Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Jamie Begian. The program will feature traditional big band jazz standards and holiday classics such as “Sleigh Ride,” “White Christmas” and “Walking in a Winter Wonderland.”
