WestConn art faculty to show works of art
DANBURY, CONN. — From sculpture to photography and from painting to graphic design, the art department faculty at Western Connecticut State University will show off its work at an art exhibit that will open November 17.
A reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the Higgins Hall Gallery on the first floor of Higgins Hall on the Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The exhibit will run through December 10 and will be open Monday through Thursday from noon to 4 p.m.
The art faculty at WestConn is a group of strong, highly accomplished professional artists, some of whom have dedicated more than 30 years at the university. The displayed art will include painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, photography, sculpture, illustration and graphic design.
Professor of Art Abe Echevarria submitted two paintings for the show: one focuses on the history of the Basque people of northern Spain and the other on Darfur. “How people will respond to both images is unpredictable,” Echevarria said. “My hope is that they will stir interest in these areas of conflict.”
Assistant Professor of Art Cathy Vanaria will exhibit two “larger-than-life” black-and-white photos. “Both of these photographs are from a portrait series I started back in 2008,” Vanaria said. “They are extremely tight crops of people’s faces. I am always interested in different reactions since it opens up more questions for me to examine in future work.”
