2015 WCSU event ‘checks in’ on students’ well-being
DANBURY, CONN. — As students move into the residence halls and prepare to attend classes this fall, Western Connecticut State University wants students to know that there are people on campus to help them with everything from stress to substance abuse.
On Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015, from noon to 3 p.m., WCSU will host the second annual “Fresh Check Day” program event designed to “check-in” on students’ mental health and wellness. A concept created by the Jordan Porco Foundation, the free event is organized by the campus Substance Abuse Prevention Program in an effort to increase awareness of mental health issues, reduce the stigma and misconceptions that may deter students from asking for help and guidance, and increase the overall wellness on campus.
The event will be held as an expo on the lawn of Fairfield Hall on the university’s Midtown campus with food, prizes and giveaways. Booths will feature peer-to-peer messaging in a positive, community-focused setting. By recognizing the stress, fears and concerns of people ages 18-24, Fresh Check Day works to encourage open dialogue between students, their peers and professionals who can help.
In case of rain, the event will be held in the Student Center lobby.
