WCSU 2016 – Statement on Orlando tragedy
Dear Campus Community,
Western Connecticut State University mourns the victims of the Sunday terror attack in Orlando. We share in the shock and grief the nation feels for this kind of senseless violence and we are concerned about how this will impact our LGBT community here at Western Connecticut State University. For those students who are on campus this summer and are struggling to deal with this tragedy, the Counseling Center will be available to assist them in these difficult days ahead. If you are aware of a student who may need support, please encourage them to contact the Counseling Center for an appointment. The Counseling Center is location in Room 222 of the Midtown Student Center. The phone number is (203) 837-8690. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Faculty and staff are reminded that support is available to them as well through the Employee Assistance Program. Western Connecticut State University places a great value on being an inclusive community. As President Obama has stated, the attack in Orlando was “an attack on all of us and on the fundamental values of equality and dignity that define us as a country.” As a gesture of solidarity with those who have suffered in this tragedy, we will fly our campus flag at half-staff for the remainder of this week. Our prayers go out to all those who were injured as well as to the families of those who were killed. Western Connecticut State University is a caring community and we will do everything possible to continue to build a culture of care and support on our campus. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Student Affairs – (203) 837-9700 or the Office of Diversity & Equity – (203) 837-8277.
