DANBURY, CONN. — Western Connecticut State University will offer information sessions about 2017 study-abroad opportunities in Spain at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, Wednesday, Oct. 5, and Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016, in Warner Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The sessions will be free and the public is invited.

During the four-week program in Spain from May 17 through June 19, 2017, participants will have the opportunity to learn about a new culture as they become immersed in the Mediterranean lifestyle. Course work will enable participants to enhance their knowledge of the Spanish language, while experiencing the art and cultural heritage of Spain through trips to museums, historical sites and cultural attractions. The study-abroad program will allow WCSU students to earn six credits that will fulfill intercultural competence and language requirements.

Dr. Galina Bakhtiarova, chair of the WCSU Department of World Languages & Literature and a professor of Spanish, will lead the excursion to Spain. Destinations in the itinerary will include Malaga, a Mediterranean city with a history dating back nearly three millennia; a weekend trip to Madrid to explore the Spanish capital’s cultural treasures; and a weekend visit to the Mediterranean resort, Marbella, to relax by the seaside.

“Studying abroad is a necessity, not a luxury,” Bakhtiarova said. “It opens a world of opportunities.”

One student who participated in a previous WCSU short course abroad in Spain said, “The trip was the most profound experience of my life. I saw and learned things that I never thought would be possible.” Another participant observed, “This trip was marvelous. I learned not only about art, but also about life, culture and myself.”
