DANBURY, CONN. — Western Connecticut State University graduates Nancy and David Nurnberger are committed to ensuring that their alma mater remains affordable and accessible to a new generation of students.

In his fourth year serving as chairman of the WCSU Foundation Board of Directors, Nurnberger and his wife, Nancy, have recently established a scholarship fund for students pursuing teaching careers. They will be honored with the Foundation’s Community Service Award for their commitment to the university and the community at the 31st annual WestConn Society Luncheon. The luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 28, 2012, at the Matrix Corporate Center, 39 Old Ridgebury Road in Danbury.

In addition to his work with the WCSU Foundation, David Nurnberger is the president of the Board of Directors of Ann’s Place – The Home of I CAN, in Danbury. He was previously chair of the Greater Danbury Chamber of Commerce and served on the Board of the Fairfield County Community Foundation and the Greater Danbury Fund.

Nancy Nurnberger has devoted her career to helping children. Following her career as a first-grade teacher, Nancy has volunteered at a local pre-school and at a therapeutic horse farm for children with disabilities. She has also made three trips to the jungles of Mexico with Simply Smiles Inc. to help children at an orphanage, build housing for the poor and distribute food to families.

The WCSU Foundation, established in 1971, is dedicated to raising and managing donations for the university and its students. As board chairman, Nurnberger has said he hopes to continue to expand Foundation resources to offer more scholarships to students. Nurnberger retired in January 2011 as senior vice president for human resources at Ridgefield-based Boehringer Ingelheim after a 35-year management career in the nonprofit and corporate sectors.
