Westconn Research Day 2018

Students from ALL MAJORS are invited to participate and to share their work with the University community in a setting similar to a professional conference. Participation in WRD is fun, educational, and a good activity for students to list on their resumes when applying for a job or to graduate/professional schools.

This year’s event will be held on Friday, May 4th, 2018 in the Science Building on the mid-town campus. The event will begin at 10:00am with opening remarks, and presentations from two WCSU alumni speakers, followed by the presentation of student work. Student entries will be judged by members of the university community and prizes for the top student presentations will be awarded by the Provost at the close of the event. Refreshments will be served. This year’s alumni speakers will be Dr. Jeremiah Johnson, Practitioner in Residence, from the University of New Haven (Justice & Law Administration) and Anthony DiDomenico, Product Specialist, from Czitek (Chemistry).

Students wishing to participate in WRD should write an abstract (100 word limit) summarizing their research or creative work (abstract guidelines are available at https://www.wcsu.edu/wrd/guidelines/). After the abstract is reviewed by the faculty mentor, students should submit their abstracts electronically at www.wcsu.edu/wrd anytime between March 12th, 2018 and the deadline of 4:00pm on April 5th, 2018. Late submissions will NOT be accepted for any reason. The WRD Planning Committee will meet to review abstracts, and will contact students to let them know if their abstracts are accepted. At the time of submission, students will need to indicate what kind of space they will require to present their work. For example, if the student is presenting a professional poster wall space will be required. If a student is presenting a computer presentation, an electrical outlet may need to be available. If the student is performing a musical composition, a separate room may be necessary.

The WCSU Sigma Xi Chapter will be hosting a Workshop on Resume Writing for STEM careers and associate membership in Sigma Xi (Becoming a member). The workshop will occur right after WRD on May 4, 2018 from 2-4:30pm.  It is open to all students, and will take place in SB244.

In addition, the WCSU Sigma Xi Chapter will once again be nominating and selecting the 2018 Sigma Xi Research Award recipients. The awards will be given to the recipients on May 4, 2018 at 5:00PM in the Biology Conference Room. More information regarding this matter will be posted shortly.
