Daryle L. Brown, Department of Nursing

Dr. Daryle Brown, Professor of Nursing, joined the Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) Nursing department full-time fall 2003 as an Associate Professor.  Dr. Brown received her BSN from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.  She received her M.A., M.Ed. and Ed.D. from Teachers College Columbia University with a major in nursing education/ medical-surgical nursing/ adult health/ professorial role.  She came to WCSU after 23 years of teaching nursing at a private, suburban university where she held various positions as a full-time faculty member, including teaching in associate (AD), baccalaureate (BSN) and combined degree (CDP) nursing programs; serving as chair of the AD nursing program; and, as Associate Dean of the department of undergraduate nursing.  Dr. Brown currently teaches medical-surgical nursing and mathematics for medication administration.

Dr. Brown’s areas of research include mathematic competencies of nursing students (Can You Do the Math? Nurse Educator 2006), faculty-student interactions that promote diversity (Cultural diversity: Students’ perspectives Journal of Transcultural Nursing 2002) and innovative assignments in the clinical area (Using Art and Literature in the Clinical Setting  Nurse Educator 2009).  She has published and presented at various venues on these and other topics.

Dr. Brown has been an item writer for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), the organization responsible for developing and administering the NCLEX-RN licensing exam.  She was nominated by the Connecticut State Board of Nursing and selected by the NCSBN on the basis of background and nursing expertise.
Dr. Brown is a member of several professional organizations, serving in various capacities, including American Nurses’ Association (ANA), Connecticut Nurses’ Association (CNA), and Sigma Theta Tau International.  She also holds a life-time membership in the Kent State University Alumni Association.

Dr. Brown was selected for inclusion in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 1998, 2002 and2005.  She was the recipient of the prestigious Josephine A. Dolan Award for Outstanding Contributions to Nursing Education from the Connecticut Nurse’s Association.  This award recognized Dr. Brown for her leadership, expertise and noteworthy accomplishments in the field of nursing.
