Bill Schmidt

Bill Schmidt is an American abstract painter, born in Trenton, New Jersey.  He holds a BFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and also studied at the Skowhegan School.  He received his MFA in Painting from Maryland Institute College of Art.  In 1996 he became a Resident Artist in MICA’s Post-Baccalaureate Program in Fine Art, a position held until he was appointed the Interim Director in 2001.  Since 2006 he has been the program’s Director.

Schmidt’s work has been exhibited extensively with solo shows in Baltimore, Washington and Philadelphia.  Recent group shows include “Variations in Paint” at the Drawing Center, NYC, “Interior Space – Small Scale Abstract Painting” at Long Island University, and “Squared” at Geoffrey Young Gallery in Great Barrington, MA.  He has received numerous grants and awards, including an artist residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in 2014.

In addition to his involvement with art, Schmidt is a musician who has played traditional American music for over 40 years.  He has recorded numerous times and performed in Canada, Europe and the U.S.
