FALL 2022 Welcome Week Schedule

 August 26 – September 5, 2022

Friday, August 26

In order to prepare for your first of many traditions at WCSU, collect your FREE commemorative Welcome Week T-shirt at Orientation Headquarters in the Student Center Plaza. This T-shirt shows pride in your new beginnings at WCSU! It’s created new and unique each year for this special occasion. Wear the T-shirt during the “Entering the Gates” ceremony, at future sporting events, and on WCSU Wednesdays.

8:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m.
Midtown Computer Center and Westside Computer Center (opens at 9 a.m.) are open. Students are welcome to use available computers. Students are also able to print in black and white or in color by swiping their Student ID card.

9:00 a.m. – Noon
Resident Student Check-in and Move-in will take place in each student’s residence hall.
Students need to move in during their appointed color-coded move-in time only.  Members of
various student organizations and athletic teams will be available to assist with luggage.

10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
Tours of Midtown campus – leave from the Midtown Student Center Plaza.  Each tour lasts approx. 1 hour.

10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
The Campus Bookstore will be open for students to purchase textbooks required for classes and WCSU apparel. The bookstore is located on the Midtown Campus on the first floor of the Student Center.

10:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m.
The Westside Market Place will be open for students.

11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
Commuter Student Check-in in the Midtown Student Center Lobby.  Commuter students do not need to be here early unless they want to take a tour or come for other activities such as the Alumni photo.  Main activities for commuters begin with the line-up at 1 p.m.

Alumni Legacy Photo – If one of your Parents or Grandparents is Alum, please join us on the front steps of Old Main for a “Next Generation” photo.

Assemble on Alumni & Friends Circle for Entering the Gates ceremony.  Please wear your Welcome Week t-shirt, which you pick up in the Orientation Headquarters tent on the Midtown Student Center Plaza.

Entering the Gates ceremony in Alumni & Friends Circle
During the “Entering the Gates” ceremony, you, as a new member of the WCSU community, will enter through the university gates, symbolically leaving behind your life as a high school student or student at another university.  Led by the university president, deans, and faculty in academic regalia, you will enter and accept your new role as a responsible member of the WCSU community and university life.

It’s time to take on your new role and be proud of it!

When the poop hits the fan…, Warner Hall 101
When the poop hits the fan will you have TP to clean up the mess? This interactive presentation addresses situations that are likely to occur not just during the college years, but in life in general and offers simple solutions to plan, prepare and prevail.

PARENT WORKSHOP – Video Presentation of Mike Weber in Ives Concert Hall.  Changes for College – Parent Edition. It’s new…it’s exciting…it’s scary! “For 18 years you’ve worked, invested, cried, laughed and had fun watching them grow.  We live in the age of ‘helicopter’ parents.  We hover around trying to solve our children’s problems.  But now it’s up to them.” This session provides concrete tools and realistic answers to the challenges of letting go.  The father of 2 college age sons, Mike speaks from experience.  With stories and activities, he paints a realistic picture of the transitions our relationships go through as we transition to parents of college age students.  You’ll laugh.  You’ll cry.  But best of all you’ll leave with ideas and strategies on how to help your child succeed and excel in college.

Families are welcome to join the students. Meal plans are active, so resident students need to swipe their card. The cost for family members is $10.65 per person ($6.50 for children 12 and under).  Family members can pay as they go through the line in Midtown Student Restaurant or Westside Marketplace.  All resident and commuter students swipe your card at the cash register

Affiliate program: CityCenter Danbury: Farmers’ Market at Danbury Green. Every Saturday through October the Farmers’ Market has a variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables for purchase along with live music.

RecFest ’22 … Come find us on the Recreation Field. Come prepared to get wet! Have fun with our H2O inflatable obstacle course and Rage Room. You can also enjoy a friendly game of sand volleyball and a variety of other lawn games. Enjoy “Tag My Name” where you create your very own personalized license tag made with up-cycled real license plate letters.  Many different states to choose from and lots of fun to create! Ice Cream Emergency will be on site from 2:30 – 5:30 p.m. and the BBQ will begin at 4 :00 p.m. So, come join us and GET REC’D this fall!

4:00 – 6:00 p.m.  COME TO HAVE FUN
Barbeque on the REC Field Science Building, The Midtown Student Center Restaurant will be closed after 3:00 p.m., but the Westside Café will be open until 7:00 p.m..  All First time/First year resident and commuter students must swipe their ID Card.

7:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Sound Bath Meditation in Warner 101
Sound Baths are a combination of restorative yoga, meditation and a sacred sound concert. They have been shown to reduce stress, enable deep relaxation, enhance creativity, possibly uplift the spirit and help with insomnia. Participants lay down comfortably and then are “immersed” in the sounds, vibrations and harmonics of the instruments. No previous knowledge or experience is required. Bring yoga mat if you have one.

Orientation Leaders present a series of vignettes to incoming students to introduce them to a variety of issues that they will be facing as they make their transition to college followed by time to talk with OLs about vignettes and ask any other questions students may have.

Distinguished Daredevils (a stunt duo) – Ives Concert Hall, Sponsored by Program Activities Council (PAC)
The “Distinguished Daredevils” are redefining what a variety act can be! Noah Royak & Bill Berry have joined forces and the credentials are undeniable: Guinness World Records, Juggling Championships, APCA Juggler of the year awards and lots more! There’s sword swallowing, tazer juggling, feats of balance, and it’s all wrapped up in a family friendly yet hilarious presentation. Still not enough? They’ve performed all over the world, 80+ countries, every state, corporate events, fairs, festivals and over 350 college campuses! This act packs small, plays big, and is always a crowd pleaser.

Non-Traditional Student Reception in Warner 101
This informal reception is for all non-traditional (non-trad) students (students 25 and over) to say “hello” and let you know that the Dean of Students Office wants to work with you to see how we can help make your experience at WCSU more enriching. We hope you can join us to say “hello”, meet some of our staff, meet some of the other non-trad students, and talk about how we might be able to support you. There are many opportunities for non-trad students to provide peer-mentoring and serve in leadership roles across the campus – something we’ll briefly discuss. Light refreshments and beverages will be provided.

v Take the HART bus to go Bowling in Brookfield or New Milford, or perhaps visit

the Elephants Trunk Flea Market in New Milford on Sunday

v Go Hiking in the Westside Nature Preserve or Tarrywile Park

v Go Shopping at one of the local stores: Target, Walmart, Costco, BJ’s – check the Danbury and Surrounding Area Map for locations

v Go Ice Skating or watch an Ice Hockey Game at the Danbury Ice Arena, a 10-minute walk from the Midtown campus (www.danburyice.com)
